The Department
of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation offers a dynamic
program that prepares graduates for employment in related
areas requiring a health, physical education or recreation
degree. A student may choose to become certified to teach
physical education at the elementary, middle, and secondary
school levels. Certification for teaching health at the secondary
level also may be obtained either in conjunction with the
physical education teaching major or in conjunction with another
teaching area. An Athletic Training
major is offered within the HPER Department. An Outdoor Leadership
minor, HPER minor, a Health minor, and Coaching certification
are additional options for students.
In addition to
the professional programs, cooperative programs, and graduate
school preparation, the department also offers a service program
for the liberal studies requirement.
The department offers undergraduate work leading to the Bachelor
of Arts degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
A minimum of 126 hours is required for the degree, including
the appropriate Liberal Studies Program and all major requirements.
A minimum of 49-50 Credit Hours are required for a major,
excluding HPER 114 and HPER 115.
A student may choose
from three program concentrations. They include the following:
- Physical Education
Teacher Certification (K-12)
- Sports, Health, Leisure, & Physical Studies
- Athletic Training Major
All student
majors will be required to complete the Professional Core
and the requisite courses for their chosen concentration.
