As a student in the graphic design major, you will benefit from a comprehensive and innovative curriculum. Our program draws upon the strengths of the liberal arts and places an emphasis on service and real world client work. Many of our students take advantage of Co-op and/or internship opportunities, which enables them to learn practical knowledge that is applicable to the current design market.

Within this program you will be exposed to areas of study that include web and interactive media, publication and packaging design, signage and environmental design, information design, branding and identity design. You will explore ways to clarify complex visual communication problems within the constraints of time, space, budget, and technology (simulating a real world atmosphere).

After students graduate they often choose to work at design companies, non-profit organizations, and public service departments. Other students choose to pursue advanced degrees or start their own businesses.

Here are some additional features that distinguish the Kansas Wesleyan University Graphic Design experience:

Student to Faculty Ratio: A 19 to 1 ratio results in more student faculty interaction inside and outside the classroom.

Mac Lab: Students will have permanent access to the Mac Lab with a University ID card and password. The Lab has state of the art facilities including the following

  • 19 networked Macs with large size screens.
  • Individual secure access to a public shared network to store and back up work
  • Professional production software for publication editing, design and desktop publishing courses
  • Scanners, 2 ink-jet printers, a color laser printer and an Epson large format printer
  • Idea Paint-boundless dry erase canvas
  • Remote Desktop Technology allows for hands on teaching and group screen projection for preliminary critiques without a need to print.

Additional Labs: There is an additional room with 4 computer stations dedicated to the newspaper and yearbook team in the Fine Arts Building. Two more PC labs on campus are equipped with the Adobe Creative Suite software as well as the University Library.

Multimedia and Broadcast Laboratories: Two fully-equipped digital color studios are present on campus that provide video editing suites, audio studios, computer graphics platforms, digital video effects, advanced interactive digital equipment, audio and video field equipment, a radio station and TV, green screen, studio lighting and backdrop space and kits.

Service Work: Opportunities exist to complete graphic design projects for real clients which may result in more practical experience as well as stronger professional networks, references, resumes and portfolios.

Electives Choices: Business, media production, media management, journalism, film, audio and video reporting and anchoring, publications, advertising, photography, illustration, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Professional Organizations: Students are introduced to the design communities, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists) and the Art Directors Club, which are two of the most prestigious design organizations in the country.

Internships: The department offers additional internship opportunities for students. Our faculty, which numbers over 100, hires many of our student designers.
