The mission of the English Department at Kansas Wesleyan University is to promote an appreciation for language and literature and to cultivate its effective use in every aspect of life.

 

The study of literature fosters creative and critical abilities, encourages multiculturalism, and provides an understanding of the cultural, ethical, historical, and aesthetic forces that shape our lives.

 

Effective writing makes social and professional engagement possible. The study of rhetoric, composition, and creative writing enhances written and verbal expression so essential to communities, businesses, and organizations.

 

Literary Journal: The Catalpa

Established in 1990, The Catalpa replaced The Midland Bard, a joint literary publication of the six ACCK schools.

Since that time The Catalpa, under the direction of English majors who make up its editorial board, has provided a vehicle for students, faculty and staff of Kansas Wesleyan University to publish their fiction, poetry, essays and photography.

 

Writers Guild:

Sponsored by the English Department the Writers Guild is open to all students who are interested in producing poetry and fiction.

The purpose of the Guild is to share writing styles and further expand creativity and writing opportunities among Kansas Wesleyan University students, staff, and faculty in an informal setting.
