Grames and Holloway honored as Athletes of the Year

Darell Grames and Kelly Holloway were honored as the Kansas Wesleyan University Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Wednesday night at the annual Honors Convocation held in Sams Chapel.

Franklin Gene Bissell Male Athlete of the Year – Darell Grames
Darell Grames is the 2006 recipient of the Franklin Gene Bissell Male Athlete of the Year award. Grames, a native of Red Bluff, California, led the NAIA in rushing at 162.8 yards per game, nine yards per game better than any other rusher in the nation. He received several First Team All-American awards, including NAIAFootball.net, and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He was named Honorable Mention All-American by the NAIA. He was also named as a Don Hansen First Team All-Central Region player. He also was named the KCAC Offensive Player of the Year, as well as earning First-Team All-KCAC honors.
Grames also excels in the classroom, as he was named a Daktronics-NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete in Football.

Mary Virginia Bevan Female Athlete of the Year – Kelly Holloway
Kelly Holloway is the 2006 recipient of the Mary Virginia Bevan Female Athlete of the Year award. Holloway, a junior defender from Newhall, California, is a member of the 2005 KCAC Women’s Soccer Championship team, the best women’s soccer team in KWU history. The Lady Coyotes rewrote the record books in every category this season, in addition to making their first ever NAIA Regional Play-off appearance. Holloway was named First Team All-KCAC, KCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. She was also named First Team All-NAIA Region IV, as well as being named an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American last fall.
The Male Athlete of the Year award is named for former coach and athletic director Gene Bissell, who is the all-time coaching wins leader in Coyote Football history. Bissell Field at Glen Martin Stadium is also named in his honor.
The Female Athlete of the Year award is named for former women's sports coach Mary Virginia (Ginny) Bevan. Bevan was a pioneer of women's athletics not only at Kansas Wesleyan but nationally.
