Coyotes power past Oklahoma Wesleyan
By: David Toelle, KWU Sports Information

Home is a good place for the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes. After winning on Tuesday night over Central Christian 13-7, KWU completed a double header sweep of a short-handed Oklahoma Wesleyan team 18-8 and 13-2 on Friday afternoon at Evans Stadium.

Both teams exercised their bats early, scoring five runs in the first of game one, but it was the Coyotes who continued the explosion in the bottom half of the third. Adam Carroll connected on a three run shot over the center field fence to get things started for the Coyotes. Guy McGriff singled following the homer and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Miller.

Wesleyan continued to offensive onslaught in the bottom of the third putting 13 total runs on the board in the frame and jumping out to an 18-5 lead after three.

Oklahoma Wesleyan was able to score three in the top half of the fourth. After two singles, KWU’s Brandon Cole dropped a fly ball to right field by Sean Bridges. Santiago Maldonado then singled home Bridges before John Rigsby lined out to second base.

The Coyotes held OWU scoreless for the remainder of the game, and finished the game in five innings on the ten-run rule.

A.J. Anthony took the win for the Coyotes, pitching five – giving up nine hits and eight runs, six of them earned. Nathan England took the loss for Oklahoma Wesleyan pitching 2.1 innings and giving up 15 runs on ten hits, 13 of those runs were earned.

Game two was a repeat of the first. It took a few innings for the offense to get started for both teams. KWU took a lead 2-1 after the first inning thanks to two doubles by Sean Zuniga and Andrew Gulla. Gulla came around to score as Carroll grounded out to the short stop.

The Coyotes scored four in the bottom of the fourth, as Zuniga again drove in two runs with a single.

After giving up a run in the top of the fifth on a double by TJ Thomas, the Coyotes exploded again in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six. Adam Carroll singled and came around to score on a two run shot by Travis L’Homedieu. Kyle Dillehay then singled and Miller reached on an error allowing Trevor Howell to hit a game ending three-run shot just under the scoreboard in left field.

Brett Horseman picked up the win for the Coyotes who improve to 8-12 overall, pitching 4.2 innings, only giving up one run on three hits. Jason Wenaas took the loss for OWU pitching three innings, giving up four runs on four hits.

Andrew Gulla totaled six RBIs in the double header to lead the Coyotes.

The Coyotes play this Saturday and Sunday in the Falcon Roundup in Wichita, before heading to McPherson to play Central Christian on Tuesday. The Coyotes then open KCAC play at home on next Wednesday at home against the University of Saint Mary.
