With a score that resembled more of a football game than a baseball game, Kansas Wesleyan dropped its second game of the NAIA Region IV Baseball Tournament to York (Neb.) 17-10 at Westgate Field.
The loss ends the Coyotes’ season at 27-26 overall.
Both teams notched a run in the first, and York added four in its half of the second, but the Coyotes put an eight-spot on the board in the bottom half of the second to take a 9-5 lead after two.
Chad Petersen led off the second with a single followed by a fielder’s choice by Ronny Romo. Paul Bridenbaugh would single to start a string of four straight singles for the Coyotes. Carlos Sanchez would then walk to load the bases, and after a pitching change, Andrew Masojc would be hit to drive home a run. After a Guy McGriff fly out, Petersen would take full advantage of his second at bat of the inning to launch a grand slam to left center to cap the eight run frame for Wesleyan.
After a scoreless third, York would add three in the fourth and then put an eight-spot of its own on the board in the fifth.
Wesleyan would add only one more run in the bottom of the seventh the rest of the way. Masojc would score after doubling on a single by McGriff.
York would add one more in the ninth when John Richards would score on a single by Michael DeWitt after doubling.
Shaun Sumter would take the loss for the Coyotes, giving up seven runs on eight hits while pitching just one-third of an inning, despite facing ten batters. Romero led the Coyotes with three hits, while four others had two each, including Petersen who led Wesleyan with four RBIs, all coming on his grand slam in the second.
Derek Tuxhorn got the win for the Panthers, pitching 7.2 innings of relief, giving up three runs on seven hits. Four different York players had three hits as the Panthers banged out 21 hits on the night. Richards led the way with 5 RBIs for York.
York advances on to play Bethany on Thursday afternoon at 2:30, while the Coyotes conclude their season at 27-26 overall.
