Kansas Wesleyan won its fourth straight game, and posted its second KCAC doubleheader sweep in a row as the Coyotes knocked out the Tabor Bluejays 6-1 and 6-1 on Monday night at Dean Evans Stadium.
The Coyotes came out swinging from the start of their double-header against Tabor, and went on to win the first game 6-1. Casey Barnes shut down the first three batters in consecutive order to get out of the top half of the inning. Then came an absolute explosion of offense when the ‘Yotes stepped up for their turn at the plate. They scored three runs off three singles and then capped it off with a two-run homerun by Chad Peterson over the left-centerfield fence.
Wesleyan would cruise through the rest of the game only scoring one more in the bottom of the fourth on good base running by Guy McGriff and Chad Peterson as the Coyotes ran a delay-stop steal to score McGriff from third.
Casey Barnes had one of his most successful games of the season allowing just one run, five scattered hits, and striking out seven while only walking four throughout the complete game. He commented on the game by saying “I did my job and gave the team a chance to win the ball game. I think we now have pretty good shot at being one of the top two teams in conference.”
Stephen Cilladi and Paul Bridenbaugh led the nine hit attack with two hits a piece. Matt Garretson, Andrew Masojc, Ronny Romo, Peterson, and McGriff all had one. McGriff had a double and Peterson had a home-run.
Game two started off slowly for both teams, but ended with the same result as the Coyotes went on to win 6-1 again. Kate McAllister had an excellent outing throwing all seven innings, as the Coyote hitters chalked up 13 hits to complete the sweep. McAllister gave up six hits, one run, struck out three, and walked three.
Tabor led 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth when the Coyote bats finally sound some pop. Carlos Sanchez led off with a triple that was followed by six singles. Dustin Romero laid down an excellent squeeze bunt that allowed McGriff to score as the Coyotes scored four times in the frame.
Carlos Sanchez led the team with three hits. Garretson and McGriff both added two. Romero, Montoya, Masojc, Peterson, Bridenbaugh, and Kenney all added one. McGriff had a double.
Wesleyan held the Blue Jays scoreless and put two more runs up to close the game. It was their fourth in a row and the Coyotes are now 14-21 overall and 8-6 in KCAC play.
The Coyotes continue action in Lindsborg against Bethany starting at 2:00 on Tuesday, and then are back at home hosting another doubleheader against Friends on Wednesday at Dean Evans Stadium.
