By: Andy Brockman, KWU Sports Information
Day two of the KCAC Baseball Tournament is complete, and the participating teams turned up the offense in the three games with 83 total runs scored. Bethany will meet Saint Mary in Saturday’s championship game.
Game one: Ottawa 17, Sterling 16 -- Both Ottawa and Sterling took full advantage of the wind blowing out to center today at Dean Evans Stadium by hitting a combined four home runs and five doubles and scored thirty-three runs. Sterling led for the majority of the game and was up 13-7 at the end of five innings. Ottawa would not go away, however, and tallied back-to-back-to-back four run innings to take the lead. Sterling went into the last inning down by four and managed to pound out three runs to cut the lead to one but the rally would end there and Ottawa got the win to advance in the tournament.
Ottawa had seventeen hits, led by Travis Persinger with four and he also added five RBI’s. Joe Summers and Tommy King each added three hits as well.
Sterling also had seventeen hits, and was led with a great hitting performance by Rob Carroll who had four hits and seven RBI’s. Murri Lazaroff-Babin added three hits.
Both teams were forced to use three pitchers in the game. Ottawa’s Brandon Myers would come in and pick up the winning, pitching the final 4.1 innings and giving up three runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking four.
Sterling’s starter, Joel Orr, took the loss while giving up twelve runs on fourteen hits while striking out five and walking two.
Game 2: Bethany 23, Saint Mary 3 (7 innings) -- Both teams scored one run in the first inning but it was never a game after that. Bethany scored twenty runs in the next three innings and St. Mary could not find an answer to stop the overpowering Bethany offense. Bethany would end up winning the game, 23-3, in seven innings but putting the mercy rule into effect.
Bethany had twenty-three hits in the game, led by Andrew Ferguson with four. Harold Holbert and Danny Fernandez each added three hits.
Saint Mary managed to get five hits, including two from Dustin Smith.
Greg Byron picked up the win for Bethany, pitching six innings and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight and only walking one.
Carlos Martinez got the loss for St. Mary, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up ten runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one.
Game 3: Saint Mary 18, Ottawa 7 -- The game started off looking like a change of pace from the first two with the pitchers not allowing any big innings, but that changed in the sixth. Saint Mary was ahead, 5-3, and broke loose for a ten running inning that took the air out of Ottawa and went on to win the game, 18-7.
Saint Mary had thirteen hits and was led by Dustin Smith with three. Glen Aveson, Cody Newman, and Stephen Maurin all added two hits.
Ottawa had eleven hits and was led by Joe Summers with four. Travis Persinger added three hits as well.
Carlos Martinez pitched the complete game for Saint Mary, going nine innings allowing seven runs on eleven hits while striking out six and walking two. He also threw fifty-one pitches in the previous game that took place right before this one.
Moritz Sckaer took the loss for Ottawa, pitching 5.1 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking two.
