Wesleyan pitcher
AJ Anthony scattered six hits over seven innings in game one
of a doubleheader with Ottawa University on Wednesday, but
gave up two runs – one unearned – in the first
as the Coyotes lost to the Braves 2-0 in the first game.
Ottawa lead off
hitter Neil Moore reached first on an error by the first baseman
and came around to score on a single by Jim Summers. After
a walk to Birch Royball, Summers lined a Anthony pitch into
left field, and Summers scored the second and final run of
the game.
The Coyotes threatened
in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases, but Trevor
Howell lined a shot that second baseman Stan Klaus fielded
the ball on one hop, stepped on second and threw to first
for the double play to end the Coyote scoring chance.
Ottawa pitcher
Ryan Jordan scattered four hits over seven innings picking
up the shutout win for the Braves.
Game two started
out in similar fashion to game one with Ottawa jumping out
to a 2-0 lead on a defensive miscue by Wesleyan. Tyler Lynnes
singled and then went to second on an error by the KWU shortstop
Matt Garretson. Lynnes then scored on a RBI single by Jim
Summers. Summers came around to score on a single by Danny
Holmes.
Wesleyan’s
offense came to life in the third inning as Garretson scored
on a RBI single by Kyle Dillehay. Wesleyan scored again in
the bottom of the frame as Andy Brockman scored after being
hit by a pitch on another RBIU single, this time by Ryan Wardein.
Another RBI single in the inning, this time by Brian West,
allowed Dillehay to score and Wesleyan jumped ahead 3-2 after
three innings.
Ottawa responded
scoring five runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead
7-3. Wesleyan got within two at 7-5 in the bottom half of
the fourth on an RBI single by Brockman, and a sacrifice by
AJ Anthony.
Wesleyan closed
the gap to one run, 7-6 on a homer by Ryan Wardein in the
bottom of the fifth, but could no closer as Ottawa tagged
on an insurance run in each of the last two innings to come
away with the 9-6 win.
Starting pitcher
Cole Crawley took the loss for Wesleyan giving up seven hits
and five runs, all of them earned in just three and a third
innings of work. Salina native Kadem Tharp got the win for
Ottawa, giving up five hits and five runs over four innings.
Brian Woods came in and got the save for the Braves pitching
three innings of one hit ball.
Wesleyan’s
record drops to 3-13 in the KCAC, and 8-32 overall. The Coyotes
host Hillsdale FreeWill Baptist Thursday in a non-conference
doubleheader starting at 2:00 at Evans Stadium.
