Jolene Mick got her KWU cross country career started off with a bang Friday night, as she cruised to the individual title in the women’s race of the Friends University Night Invitational at Lake Afton in Goddard.
“Jolene Mick won the meet with a blistering time of 18:43 beating the rest of the pack by a minute and two seconds,” KWU head coach Zach Kindler said. “She looked very strong and definitely turned some heads.”
Mick won with a time of 18:43, besting the second place finisher Jeniffer Cherono of Cowley College by over a minute. Mick is no stranger to being on top. While at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Mick was a five-time national champion.
Sarah Williams finished in eighth (20:24), Nicole Heptig was 15th (21:15), Kara Walker 18th (21:25), and Nicole Nicastro (21:51) was 23rd to round out the top five for the Coyotes. Other Coyote finishers included Sarah Knorp in 26th (21:56), Yeleny Torres in 37th (22:32) and Ashley Toews in 39th (22:47).

On the men’s side the Coyotes were paced by Salina South product Mark Winkel, who finished 41st with a time of 29:47. Gabe Russell was next for the Coyotes with a 30:05, followed by Seth Schooley with a 30:53, and Paul Minneman with a 31:11.
“I was extremely excited with the way our guys ran,” Kindler said. “They all had personal bests and should do so as well next week.”
The Coyotes were without the services of two runners on the men’s side in Bryan Carrasquillo and Tyler Jensen, and did not figure into the team standings.
Next meet for the Coyote harriers is next Saturday in McPherson at the McPherson Country Club with the women’s race starting at 10:30 AM.
