Women finish second, Men fifth at KCAC Championships

MARION LAKE – Kansas Wesleyan finished second on the women’s side and fifth on the men’s side in the KCAC Cross Country Championships held on October 27 at Cottonwood Point.

On the women’s side, Jolene Mick won the individual title for a second straight season, finishing in a time of 18:29.37, beating Southwestern’s Ericka Franklin by five seconds.

Sarah Williams finished fifth with a 19:04 and Yeleny Torres finished sixth with a 19:15, as Mick, Williams and Torres all earned All-KCAC honors.

Nicole Nicastro finished 18th in 20:04.14, while Lauren Ross was 24th with a 20:29.61. Ashley Toews rounded out the women’s runners for the Lady Coyotes with a 21:35.47, finishing in 39th position.

As a team, the Lady Coyotes finished second overall with 54 points, 11 behind meet champion Southwestern.

On the men’s side, Mark Winkel was the top finisher for the Coyotes, finishing in 12th place with a 27:56.98. Paul Minneman was 15th with a 28:00.48. Both Winkel and Minneman earned Honorable Mention All-KCAC honors.

Gabe Russell finished in 34th with a 29:09.71, while Seth Schooley was 37th with a 29:15.98, and Bryan Carasquilllo was 67th with a 39:17.15.

Overall, the men finished fifth as a team, scoring 126 points, finishing behind Tabor in fourth place with 107. Southwestern ran away with the men’s championhip, scoring 20 points, besting second place McPherson by 52 points.

Both KWU Cross Country teams are back in action this weekend at the NAIA Region IV Championships in Omaha, Neb. The women’s race is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m., and the meet is hosted by Saint Mary (Neb.).
