Kansas Wesleyan has had a player earn KCAC Player of the Week honors in football for the second consecutive week as Willie Johnson was named KCAC Defensive Player of the Week in football for his efforts in the Coyotes’ 3-0 win over Saint Mary on Saturday.
Johnson, a 6-1 190 pound defensive back from Redding, Calif., is in his first season at KWU after transferring from Shasta (Calif.) Junior College. In Saturday’s win over Saint Mary, Johnson had four tackles (two solo and two assisted), as well as one tackle for loss. Johnson was instrumental in keeping Saint Mary off the scoreboard late in the game as he pulled down two interceptions in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Coyotes.
The shutout win was the first for the Coyotes since the 2002 season, when Wesleyan posted three shutouts against Friends, Ottawa and Bethel, the last of which being a 42-0 effort against the Threshers.
The Coyotes are on the road again this week at Ottawa before beginning a three-game homestand on October 7 against Southwestern.
