The Kansas Wesleyan University JV Football team wrapped up its 2007 season with a 30-6 victory over Hastings (Neb.) on Monday night at Martin Stadium. It was the second time the two teams met during the season, with Wesleyan getting wins in both games.
The Coyotes wasted no time getting on the board early. On the first play from scrimmage Aaron Feldkamp hit Ryan Pelfrey wide open over the middle for a 68-yard touchdown pass. The PAT pass attempt would fail, and the Coyotes would lead 6-0.
Wesleyan would hit paydirt again just before the end of the first quarter, when Joseph Guillory would score from one yard out, and the PAT pass from Feldkamp to Pelfrey was good putting the Coyotes up 14-0.
The Coyotes would add one more score in the first half when Feldkamp would hit Guillory from two yards out with seven seconds left in the second quarter.
KWU would take a 20-0 lead into the halftime break.
Neither team could find the scoreboard in the third quarter, but it only took five seconds of the fourth for the Coyotes to light it up again. A bad snap on a punt would sail over the Hastings player’s head and would be covered up in the endzone for a safety, putting Wesleyan ahead 22-0.
The Broncos would get their only score of the night at the 10:49 mark of the fourth when Grant Robinson would score from three yards out. The PAT pass would fail and Wesleyan’s lead would be cut to 22-6.
The Coyotes wasted no time getting back on the board. Corey Tate took the kickoff at the 30-yard line and sprinted right up the middle through the defense and cut to the left sideline and went 70 yards untouched for the score. Feldkamp’s PAT pass would be good, putting the Coyotes up 30-6.
Neither team could find the endzone the rest of the night, despite the Coyotes giving Hastings a few opportunities with short fields following turnovers. Wesleyan’s defense would step up to the challenge, and keep the Broncos out of the endzone.
Wesleyan’s JV finishes its season with a 3-2 record, recording two wins over the Broncos and another over KCAC rival Bethel 42-21 last week in a game where the Coyotes scored 42 unanswered points after trailing 13-0.
The KWU varsity is back in action on Saturday when they host Saint Mary at 3:00 p.m. at Salina Stadium. The kickoff, originally scheduled for 1:30, was moved back due to Salvation Army football going on Saturday morning at the Stadium.
