Kansas Wesleyan University will hold a "Meet the Coach" session with Coach Davert on Friday, August 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the McAdams Student Center in Pioneer Hall.
Kansas Wesleyan University Director of Athletic Programs Matthew Williams announces the hiring of Mike Davert as men’s basketball coach for the Coyotes.
“We are pleased to add Mike Davert to our strong group of coaches at Kansas Wesleyan,” Williams said. “Mike has proven himself as a winner at Southeast of Saline, and we look forward to him continuing that trend with the Coyotes.”
KWU President Philip Kerstetter echoed Williams about Davert.
“Mike Davert is a great fit for us at Kansas Wesleyan University,” Kerstetter said. “He understands who we are and what we want in our academic and athletic programs. I know he will bring out the very best in our students and will continue our strong tradition in basketball.”
Davert succeeds Tommy DeSalme, who coached the Coyotes this past season, leading Wesleyan to its first KCAC Championship since the 1999-2000 season, and the school’s first-ever berth to the NAIA Division II National Championships, while setting a school record for wins in a season with 28.
Davert is no stranger to Kansas Wesleyan University, as he served as assistant coach for former coach and athletic director Jerry Jones for two seasons in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
“I am really excited to be here at Kansas Wesleyan,” Davert said. “It is a job that I really wanted, and I appreciate President Kerstetter and Dr. Williams giving me the opportunity to come here.”
Davert comes to KWU after spending the last three seasons as head coach at Southeast of Saline High School, where compiled a 48-19 overall record, and led the Trojans to the 2006-07 KSHSAA Boys’ Class 3A State tournament, finishing with a 22-2 record.
“I want to pick up where the Coyotes left off last year,” Davert said. “Our goals are going to be to win the conference and the conference tournament, and then get back to the national tournament.”
Davert has been in contact with the returning players and the recruits that DeSalme had signed. He said that the overall sentiment is very good and the players are excited about the upcoming season.
“We have some excellent players returning, and I think with the recruiting class that is coming in that we hopefully can pick up right where we left off last season,” Davert said.
“I am looking forward to meeting with the players face to face in the upcoming weeks.”
Davert also said that this is a job he sees himself staying in for the long term.
“This is a job I really wanted,” he said. “I look forward to being here for a long time, as long as Kansas Wesleyan will have me here. I would like to finish out my career here.”
Davert said his coaching philosophy will be to move the ball up the floor, and play with a high level of intensity on both ends of the floor.
“The style of game I would like to play is full court. The teams I have coached have always pressed full court and gotten after it defensively,” he said. “It starts with defense, night in and night out the defensive pressure has to be there. There will be nights when your offense will struggle and you have to go into each game knowing that you can rely on your defense to get yourself some easy baskets.”
“We will definitely be a fun team to watch.”
Davert is a native of Escondido, Calif., and after starring at San Pasqual High played one season at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, Calif., before moving onto Marymount (Kan.) College, where he graduated with a degree in secondary education in 1985.
After Marymount, Davert played professionally in Dublin, Ireland, for one year, where he was also a coach.
He continued onto Emporia State (Kan.) University as a graduate assistant coach for legendary Hornet head coach Ron Slaymaker for three years while completing his master’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
After Emporia State, he was an assistant coach for one season at Central Missouri State University.
Davert also spent two seasons as head boys’ coach at Orange Glen High School in Escondido, California.
Davert begins his duties as coach immediately.
He lives in Salina with his wife, Kelly.
