Kansas Wesleyan’s Mychal Henderson has been named as the KCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts in KWU’s 64-63 win over then No.19 ranked Southwestern (Kan.) in Winfield last Thursday.
The Coyotes were scheduled to play McPherson on Saturday, but inclement weather in the area forced the postponement of that contest, along with the postponement of the other four scheduled KCAC doubleheaders.
In Thursday’s contest, Henderson was 12-of-22 from the field, including going 7-of-14 from three point range, scoring 31 points to lead the Coyotes to the win over the Moundbuilders. He also grabbed seven rebounds in the contest, but none was more important than the rebound of Rodney Jackson’s missed tip in attempt with one second left in the game that would have given Southwestern the win.
Henderson also scored what turned out to be the game winning bucket with just under a minute left.
The win improved KWU’s record to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in KCAC play. Wesleyan currently sits in a five-way tie for second place along with Ottawa, McPherson, Southwestern and Tabor.
The Coyotes are back in action on Friday as they head to Hays to take on Fort Hays State at 7 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum. After a 16-day layoff the Coyotes take on Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva on New Year’s Eve at 2 p.m., before the KWU home opener on January 5 at 4 p.m. against Bellevue (Neb.) inside Muir Gym.
