Women’s Soccer captures KCAC Championship, men post another win

After missing the championship by one game last year, the Kansas Wesleyan Women’s Soccer team took care of business, confirming the program’s first ever KCAC Championship with a 2-0 win over Tabor on Saturday evening at Martin Stadium. The women finish KCAC play with an unblemished 9-0 record, only allowing two goals during the nine games.
"It's a great thing for the university," coach Mike Dibbini said. "They've worked hard all year. They let one get away last year and had some unfinished business this year. That was their motto and they took care of business this year."
Jessica Resendez scored the first goal in the 23rd minute. She dribbled down the left side and shot across the field, beating Tabor keeper Aubrey Whitehorn, hitting the right post for the score.
Danielle Johanson scored the second goal just seven minutes later in the 30th minute on an assist from Annie Ortega. Ortega crossed the ball from the left side to Johanson who got behind Whitehorn and put the ball in the left corner.
The win was the ninth straight for the Coyotes, as they improve to 14-2-1 overall. Ashley Trinidad recorded her fifth shutout for the Coyotes in goal.
KWU will be the no.1 seed in this weekend’s KCAC Tournament at McPherson. Pairings and match times will be announced on Sunday.
In the men’s match Tabor got on the board first as Chris Adrian converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute, but Wesleyan scored three unanswered goals to cruise to the 3-1 win.
Brent Normington evened things out in the 43rd minute as he played a rebound of a shot and scored past Aaron Schmucker.
Trey Thompson added a goal in the 54th minute as he played a rebound of a Joel Gunterman shot right in front of the goal for the easy score.
Trenton Corea scored in the 74th on a pass from Tyler Little to cap the scoring for the Coyotes, who improve to 14-3 overall, and 8-1 in KCAC play.
"The men have had a great year," Dibbini said. "They stumbled in one game (against Friends), but are a very good team. They'll rebound in the (KCAC) tournament and if not there, in the (NAIA) regional tournament."
The Coyote men will be the no.2 seed in the KCAC Tournament when pairings and match times are released on Sunday.
