PARKVILLE, Mo. – Seven Kansas Wesleyan University Men’s Soccer players have been named as NAIA All-Region IV as the NAIA All-Region IV teams were released on November 27.
Mario Rodriguez and Juan Mundo were named First Team All-Region, while Jose Garay, Miguel Wenceslao, Rashaun Thompson and Thomas Umeck all earned Honorable Mention All-Region honors.
Rodriguez, a junior forward from Diamond Bar, Calif., is in his first season with the Coyotes. He led Wesleyan with 18 goals and was third in the KCAC in goals per game average at 0.90. He was also ranked No.17 in the NAIA in goals per game. Rodriguez is part of the Coyote offense that leads the NAIA in shots per game (25.19), ranked third in the nation in shots on goal (12.95) and eighth in goals per game at 3.290.
Mundo, a junior defender from Sun Valley, Calif., also is in his first season with the Coyotes. Mundo was the center back in the Coyote defense that allowed only 26 goals all season, and just six in KCAC play.
Garay, a sophomore midfielder from Palmdale, Calif., led the Coyotes with 12 assists, and was third in the KCAC at .75 assists per game. He also scored 11 goals and was ranked fifth in the conference in points per game at 2.13.
Wencelsao, a senior midfielder from Ontario, Calif., had five goals and nine assists for the Coyotes this season. He was a key component for the Coyotes on both offense and defense, setting up scoring plays for the Coyotes, and stopping many scoring opportunities in the middle of the field before they could develop for the opponents.
Thompson, a senior defender from Mesa, Ariz., was a key component on the outside of the Coyote defense that could also move into a scoring position and put the ball in the back of the net. He scored four goals on the season, including two game winners.
Umeck, a senior defender from Valencia, Calif., was part of a stiff Wesleyan defense that was a key component in the Coyotes run to a conference championship. He made several plays that kept opposing offenses from goal scoring opportunities.
Kansas Wesleyan won its second KCAC Championship in the last three years, going 8-0-1 in conference play. The Coyotes then advanced to the NAIA Region IV Championship match before dropping a hard fought 2-1 decision to Park (Mo.) on November 8.
