Thompson’s overtime goal sends Coyotes past Concordia 2-1
By: David Toelle, KWU Sports Information

Jose Garay watches his second half goal find the back of the net in KWU's 2-1 overtime win over Concordia (Neb.).

Rashaun Thompson must have got a little advice from his brother Trey on how to win a Kansas Wesleyan soccer match in overtime.

Trey Thompson hit the game winning goal in overtime against Friends in the KCAC Tournament Championship to propel the Coyotes to a 1-0 win, and into the NAIA Regional Playoffs.

Rashaun played the hero tonight as he scored with 1:52 left in overtime to send the Coyotes past Concordia (Neb.) 2-1 on Tuesday night at Martin Stadium.

A majority of the match was played in the middle of the field, as both teams played to a scoreless tie through the first half.

Wesleyan got on top first when Jose Garay scored at the 49:19 mark, knocking home a ball after his first shot deflected off Concordia’s Anthony Reichwaldt.

The Coyotes had many chances, as they fired 32 shots, but were unable to put away the Bulldogs.

Concordia (0-1) got the equalizer with 15 seconds left in regulation when Evan Gahan’s first shot was stopped by Wesleyan (1-0) keeper Ben Fetherston, but the rebound bounced back to Gahan, who knocked in the back of the net. The shot came after back-to-back yellow cards were whistled against the Coyotes just outside the penalty box.

It appeared that both teams were headed for a second overtime, despite the numerous chances by the Coyotes in the extra period.

Wesleyan’s game-winning score came off a corner kick play from the left side. The Coyotes played it deep into the box and Jayro Martinez found Thompson wide open on the right side where he poked it in for the win.

Garay had plenty of looks to score in the match, but couldn’t find the net except once on his 13 shots. Fetherston went the distance in the net for the Coyotes, as he recorded 10 saves, giving up the single goal.

The Coyotes begin a six-match road trip on Thursday when they travel to Baldwin City to take on Baker with kick-off scheduled immediately following the women at about 8:00 p.m.
