Women’s Soccer Wins, Men Tie in Double Overtime
By: Andy Brockman, KWU Sports Information Intern
It appeared that it was going to be another sweep for the Coyote Soccer teams on Saturday night at Martin Stadium, but a Bellevue comeback against the men ruined that idea.
In the women’s match, Kansas Wesleyan was on the offensive for most of the half, but it remained a tie game until Heather Muilenburg put one in the goal right before halftime for the Coyotes.
After half, the Coyotes came out firing. Eliana Parada scored quickly to make it a 2-0 Kansas Wesleyan lead. Despite many more chances to score and some close calls, there were no more goals until Bellevue’s Priscilla Flores, tacked one on the board for the Bruins. The win makes the women’s record 9-1 on the season.
The men’s game was an exciting fight throughout the whole match. Bellevue struck first but Wesleyan came right back to score two quick goals by Daynon Kirby and Mario Rodriquez. The rest of the half was filled with lots of action, included many scruffles, which led to many yellow cards given out. The game finally calmed down and the Coyotes went into half holding a 2-1 lead.
Just like the women, the men were first to score in the second half on another Rodriquez goal to make it 3-1. It appeared the Coyotes had the game under control, but the Bruins had other ideas. They scored two goals in two minutes by Tom Dodds and Casey Friend to tie the game up 3-3. Both teams were held scoreless for the last seven minutes of the game to send it to the first overtime.
The first overtime was filled with many close plays and involved more cards being given to players, but no goals were made by either team, which led the second overtime. The players were exhausted but you could see the determination on the players faces as both teams wanted to win the hard fought game. Both goalies kept the ball out of the goal again for the extra ten minutes and the game was forced to end in a tie. This tie brings the Coyotes to 5-3-1 on the season.
The Coyote Soccer teams are back in action on Wednesday, heading to North Newton to face Bethel in conference play. The women start at 5:00 and the men follow right after.
