Kansas Wesleyan Soccer recorded a pair of shutouts in its conference opener as both the men and women posted 5-0 wins over the Southwestern Moundbuilders on Wednesday night at Martin Stadium.
KWU WOMEN 5, Southwestern 0 – It only took Megan Couch 28 seconds to get the Lady Coyotes on the board and Heather Muilenburg gave her a perfect pass that she snaked passed Southwestern keeper Rachel Muth.
Wesleyan needed only five more minutes to score again as Eliana Parada took a Muilenburg pass and found the net in the sixth minute.
Parada struck again in the 18th minute with an unassisted goal, capping Wesleyan’s scoring in the first half, and forcing Southwestern to pack in the defensive pressure the remainder of the half.
The Lady Coyotes (8-1, 1-0) had plenty of chances, firing 43 shots, but missed several chances for more goals.
Southwestern (4-4, 0-1) only managed one shot in the first half by Eva Sanders that was easily handled by keeper Kelli Beatty.
Beatty and Ashley Trinidad split the shutout in goal for Wesleyan.
Kat Benton found paydirt in the 72nd minute, and Muilenburg found the net off a pass from Brittany Brown in the 81st to cap the scoring for Wesleyan.
KWU MEN 5, Southwestern 0 – Five different Coyotes scored goals as the men cruised to the win over the Moundbuilders.
Jose Garay got things started in the fourth minute with an unassisted goal, followed by Mario Rodriguez’ score ten minutes later. Brandon Rumore scored the third goal of the first half with 10:00 left to give Wesleyan a 3-0 lead at the half.
The second half saw freshman Blake Schwartz having a hand in both goals for the Coyotes. Schwartz scored off a Miguel Wenceslao pass in the 53rd minute and then assisted on Rashaun Thompson’s goal in the 66th minute, capping the scoring.
Three Wesleyan (5-3, 1-0) keepers split the shutout, as Beau Cline recorded the only save in five shots by Southwestern (3-5, 0-1) on the night.
The Coyotes step back out of conference play as they return to action on Saturday, hosting Region IV rival Bellevue (Neb.) at Martin Stadium. The women will kick off at 5:00 p.m., with the men to follow shortly after.
