PITTSBURG, Kan. – After dropping its opening game of the Pittsburg State Tournament to NCAA-II member Southwest Baptist (Mo.), Kansas Wesleyan rallied and knocked off the host Gorillas 2-0 in the second game of the day for both teams.
It’s the first time since 1989 that Wesleyan has beaten Pitt State, and is only the third win all-time against the Gorillas. PSU leads the all-time series 20-3.
The win moves KWU’s record this season to 10-3 overall.
The Lady Coyotes put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Ashley Coker reached on a pass ball third strike to lead off the inning. Jamie Peat would then reach on a fielder’s choice and would score on a single by pinch hitter Destinee Powers. Carlsie Eichberger would then score on a wild pitch for the second Wesleyan run.
Lori Lockhart would reach base on an error to lead off the Pitt State seventh, but would then be out on a double play returning to base on a lineout by Tera Swartslander to Wesleyan centerfielder Megan Duchene. Lindsay Birchfield would lineout to end the game and give the Lady Coyotes the win.
Four different Lady Coyotes would have hits in the game, including a double by Coker in the first.
Peat would pick up her fourth win of the season, improving to 4-1. She allowed seven hits while walking three and striking out one.
Stephanie Moore took the loss in relief for Pitt State, giving up two runs on two hits in three and two thirds innings of work. Jamie Roeber would have three hits to lead the Gorillas.
