Waterman finishes fifth in shot at NAIA Indoor Nationals
By: David Toelle, KWU Sports Information

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Amy Waterman became Kansas Wesleyan’s first NAIA All-American in Women’s Indoor Track since 1984, when she finished fifth overall in the shot put at the 2008 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Memorial Center.

Her throw of 45-9.25 (13.95m) placed her fifth, just behind Laura Wortmann of Mount Marty (S.D.), who threw 46-1.5. Bethany’s Jessica Becker threw 50-6 to win the event.

Jolene Mick and Sarah Williams also qualified for nationals and both ran in the women’s 5000m event. Mick finished with a 18:37.63 and Williams finished in 18:51.20, good enough for eighth and tenth in their preliminary, but neither qualified for the finals.

Waterman’s throw shatters her own indoor school record of 42-5.25 that she set just over a year ago in January, 2007 at the Bethany Throws Meet.

Dimita Jones was Wesleyan’s last NAIA Women’s Indoor Track All-American, earning the honor in 1984.
