LINDSBORG – Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball players Sarah Claborn and Kelli Berg have both hauled in KCAC and NAIA Region IV Player of the Week honors for their efforts in three KWU wins last week.
Claborn, a 5-8 sophomore outside hitter from Aurora, Colo., averaged 4.5 kills and 4.0 digs per game in 10 games last week for the Lady Coyotes en route to earning KCAC and NAIA Region IV Player of the Week honors. She had a .306 hitting percentage. She was a key component in all three KWU wins last week. She had week highs of 21 kills and 22 digs, both against McPherson.
This marks the second week this season that Claborn has earned both KCAC and NAIA Region IV Player of the Week honors.
Bethany’s Lisa Runnebaum shared KCAC honors and Laura Stepp of Ozarks (Mo.) shared regional honors with Claborn, who is now in consideration for NAIA National Player of the Week, that will be released on Wednesday.
Berg, a 5-8 setter from Logan, Kan., was named the KCAC Setter of the Week. Berg averaged 11.0 assists over ten games in three matches last week for the Lady Coyotes. She had a week high 42 assists in the win over McPherson, and had 10-plus digs in two of the three matches on the week. Kelli continues to excel at the setter position while KWU continues to run its unique offensive set, starting games in a 5-1 offense and switching to a 6-2 during, allowing Kelli to get some attack attempts. Hitting the ball, Berg had six kills in 14 attempts with no errors for a .429 kill percentage.
Berg shared NAIA Region IV Setter of the Week honors with Annie Jankowski of Saint Mary (Neb.).
KWU is ranked No.7 in NAIA Region IV in the latest regional rankings released on Monday, and is ranked No.2 in the KCAC, only one game behind conference leading Bethany.
The Lady Coyotes return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Leavenworth to take on Saint Mary at 7:00 p.m. at the Ryan Sports Center. KWU returns home on Thursday, stepping out of KCAC play to host Region V rival Baker (Kan.), in the first of three straight home matches, at 7:00 p.m. inside Muir Gym.
