Kansas Wesleyan wasted no time dispensing its opponent, Southwestern, in three games – 30-11, 30-18, 30-22 on Thursday night at Muir Gymnasium.
First year coach Shawn Taylor got a great opportunity to rest his key players for Saturday’s match against Bethel College in North Newton.
Sarah Claborn was one of three Lady Coyotes leading the way with six kills in limited action after returning from missing Tuesday’s match with an injury. Kolby Rhoades and Kathleen Thomas also added a half dozen kills for Wesleyan, while Ashley Geasland added five.
KWU jumped out to a big early lead in game one behind several Southwestern errors, and was able to cruise to the easy 30-11 lead.
Game two saw Southwestern (2-11, 0-6) hang close with the Lady Coyotes at the start of the game, until Wesleyan (10-7, 5-1) settled into its groove and cruised.
Taylor turned to his bench for a majority of the second and third games, getting a lot of the younger players valuable experience.
Kelli Berg led the way with 20 assists, while Rachel Ehrlich had seven when the Lady Coyotes switched to a 6-2 offense midway through the first game.
Ehrlich also led the way with 12 digs as she also got time at the libero position, and Karissa Kent added 11 digs, while Whitney DuBois was the top blocker with one solo and one assist block.
Wesleyan is back on the court on Saturday when they travel to North Newton to face the Bethel Threshers with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m. from Thresher Gym.
