The Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes keep on rollin’, and so does Emily Luckeroth. Two outstanding efforts from the senior guard helped her earn KCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.
The Coyotes picked up another pair of wins last week, running their season high win streak to nine games to be currently 14-2 in the KCAC and 21-5 overall. It’s the first time since the 1988 season that a Kansas Wesleyan women’s team has had a 20-plus win season.
Luckeroth averaged 21 points and seven rebounds while shooting 53.6 percent from the field, including a 52.9 percent effort from behind the three point line in two wins over rival Bethany on Thursday and Saint Mary on Saturday.
Thursday night, Luckeroth scored 27 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists in KWU’s 72-59 win over Bethany College in Lindsborg. Luckeroth’s efforts helped the Coyotes to become the first team to defeat Bethany on its home floor since Jim Campion took over the program in January.
On Saturday night at home against Saint Mary, Luckeroth scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds in the 81-59 win over the Spires. The win avenges an earlier loss to the Spires on January 15 in Leavenworth, a game in which the Coyotes shot 24 percent for the game.
The Coyotes wrap up the regular season this week, hosting McPherson on Thursday at 6 p.m. inside Mabee Arena, and then heading to North Newton to take on Bethel College on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The KCAC Playoffs begin February 23 with the tournament play in games. The Women’s quarterfinals are February 26, the semifinals are on February 28 and the KCAC Women’s Basketball Championship is on March 3. All games are played at the home site of the higher seed.
