Career Counseling and Exploration

When searching for a career path, deciding on a major, or exploring career options the decisions to be made are often overwhelming. Career Services offers ways to help make the decision process easier. Current reference tools for exploring careers, researching occupations and graduate/professional schools, writing resumes and cover letters, and preparing for interviews are available for in-office use. A computer for students to use in conducting career-related research and a counselor to help in understanding the results are available.

It is important to remember that no one assessment can tell you what career to pursue. Only you can make that decision. You should consider the results in combination with other sources of career information, including detailed descriptions of occupations, additional assessments, questioning people in different occupations, faculty, and/or career counselors.

Coyote Career Connections
Coyote Career Connections is the Kansas Wesleyan University connection through NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) which allows students to manage their career with everything at their fingertips. Students can upload documents such as resumes and cover letters, conduct job searches, set up interview schedules with employers, network with KWU alumni in the same area of interest, recieve important announcements from KWU Career Services, and much much more.. All students need to do to be a part of this innovative process is go to http://www.kwu.edu/campuslife/careerservices/employmentboard.html and click on student registration.

DISCOVER
DISCOVER is an interactive career guidance and exploration tool that can be used to find out information about
yourself, majors, and occupations. DISCOVER will take you through a series of inventories to assess your career relevant interests, abilities, and job values so that you can explore careers that are a good match for you. It will also help identify your strengths and needs, assist you in making good career decisions, and get you started on building a career plan based on your personal profile. DISCOVER offers a complete, current database of information about careers, college majors, schools and training institutions and military options. You can also find out for a specific occupation what work duties are involved, what physical requirements are needed, the average salary, and what the job market looks like.
However, you must remember that DISCOVER is an exploration tool, it is not meant to tell you what you should, ought, or must do.
To use DISCOVER, stop by Career Services M-F 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and get assigned your User ID and instructions on how to get started.

PERSONALITY TYPE INVENTORY
Personality typing is a tool with many uses. It is especially notable for its helpfulness in the areas of growth and self-development. The Personality Type Inventory consists of 70 questions which ask you about the way you react and think with regards to different situations in life. Based on your responses, Career Services will calculate your four individual preferences, and provide you with one of the 16 types you fit into.

SELF-ASSESSMENT EXERCISE
John Holland, Ph.D., whose theories concerning careers is the basis for most career inventories used today, found that people with the same or similar interests are often found in the same work environments. The Self-Assessment Exercise is a short paper inventory designed to help discover the work environments suited to your interests, abilities and personality. Career Services will also provide you with a description of each of the categories your assessment indicates and a listing of occupations others within the same categories have been successful.
