English Major Core Requirements - 36 Credit Hours

The student must complete all of the following:

ENGL 209 Major British Writers I -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 210 Major British Writers II -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 211 American Literature I -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 212 American Literature II -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 360 Advanced Creative Writing -- 3 Credit Hours or
ENGL 361 Advanced Composition -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 301 Shakespeare -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 302 Introduction to Linguistics -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 404 Seminar in Literary Criticism -- 3 Credit Hours
English electives (or cross-referenced subjects such as World Drama) -- 6 Credit Hours excluding ENGL 120, ENGL 121, and ENGL 125.

The student must complete one of the following:
ENGL 305 Studies in British Literature -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 306 Studies in American Literature -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 307 *Studies in World Literature -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 485 Special Topics -- 3 Credit Hours

The student must complete one of the following:
ENGL 206 World Literature: The European Tradition -- 3 Credit Hours
ENGL 307 *Studies in World Literature -- 3 Credit Hours
SCTH 322 World Drama I -- 3 Credit Hours
SCTH 323 World Drama II -- 3 Credit Hours
LANG 301 French, Spanish, German (301 or higher) -- 3 Credit Hours

*ENGL 307 will count only for one of the last two sections above.

Corollary Requirements: HIST105 World Civilizations I or HIST106 World Civilizations II - 3 hours. (Also satisfies Liberal Studies IV A.)
Foreign Language competence of at least the LANG102 level - 8 hrs. (Also satisfies Liberal Studies III. C and IV. F.)

*ENGL 305, 306, 307, and 485 — One of these courses is usually offered every academic year. The numbers are not usually repeated in adjacent years. In general, each number is offered once every four years; occasionally the semester or the number of the course may be changed to make the best use of available faculty, to serve special needs, or to take advantage of special opportunities. A student majoring in English is required to take at least one of these courses.

Students must complete the Liberal Studies requirements for Teacher Education Students, the Secondary Education Minor requirements, and the following additional courses:

English Minor Requirements - 18 Credit Hours

The student must complete 18 Credit Hours in English courses, excluding ENGL 120 and ENGL 121.

The following courses in Speech & Theatre may be taken for credit in English or English Education: SCTH 322 (World Drama I) and SCTH 323 (World Drama II).


ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

English as a Second Language is required of international students admitted to the university with 1) a TOEFL score of less than 500 or 2) deficiencies discovered during an English proficiency evaluation at KWU. The program is offered only to fully matriculated Kansas Wesleyan students, with the understanding that they will enroll in other portions of the university curriculum upon successful completion of the level “A” class or concurrently with upper level ESL classes, in accordance with the courses given below.
