Job Title:                             Director of Library Services

Primary Purpose:            Responsible for the full management and leadership of all Memorial Library services, staff,
                                              facilities and activities at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Reports To:                       Executive Vice-President/Provost

Employee Status:            Full-time, Exempt, Administrative Staff


  • Collaborate with library staff and departmental faculty in developing, administering, and coordinating the work of
  • Memorial Library and its staff
  • Perform managerial duties relating to personnel, budgets, collection development and library operations
  • Develop and administer informational instruction sessions to the campus community
  • Implement and expand library services to patrons
  • Recommends policies and ensures proper implementation of policies upon approval from the University’s


  • Develop, coordinate and implement workshops and instructional opportunities for the university community
  • Coordinate selection of all library materials, including books, journals and electronic databases
  • Provide supervision and delegate responsibilities to the library staff
  • Plan, implement and evaluate library services
  • Organize, train, assign and evaluate personnel
  • Prepare annual budget estimates
  • Approve time sheets and conduct staff meetings
  • Oversee equipment, furnishings and book collection, including university archives
  • Evaluate collection for balance and comprehensiveness
  • Schedule withdrawals and inventory of materials
  • Oversee and schedule use of library by outside groups
  • Direct, administer and account for expenditures of library funds in accordance with budget appropriations
  • Process and catalog books, periodicals, and multimedia materials
  • Conduct questionnaires and surveys to evaluate campus responses to the library
  • Remain current in all aspects of librarianship, through contacts with appropriate professional organizations and
  • Represent the Library at regular meetings of the Faculty, various committees, and library organizations
  • Serve as backup test administrator to the KWU Pearson Vue testing center
  • Provide reference services and individual instruction for patrons


  • Must understand the philosophy of private, church-affiliated higher education and support the mission of
    the University
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of academic library functions
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to administer the activities of an academic library and to supervise the work of others
  • Knowledge of computers, software, and electronic media
  • Understanding of reference materials in both print and electronic forms
  • Ability to climb stairs and lift up to 20# on a daily basis
  • Willing to work flexible hours and to travel as necessary to meet the responsibilities of the position

Experience and Education:

  • Master’s in Library and Information Science required from an ALA accredited program
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience directly related to responsibilities listed

Supervises the Following Staff:

  • Associate Librarian(s)
