Golf Tournament Exceeds Expectations

The Kansas Wesleyan annual Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament proved to be a huge success for sports teams and spirit squads alike last month, as the tournament raised more money and hosted the most teams since 2006.

The tournament raised over $14,000, and increased approximately $3500 in funds from the previous year. Sophie Lamb, KWU Director of Development, organized the tournament, and was encouraged by the success.

“This event surpassed all of my expectations. The teams were fantastic, the sponsors were so generous with their giveaways and most of all, and our teams were able to raise some extra funds. I’d say the day was a great success,” Lamb said. The tournament brought in 30 teams, seven more than last year’s event.

Prizes and giveaways were donated by local businesses and sponsors. Top prizes included a KWU golf bag, golf certificates from Salina Country Club. Regardless of placing, each team took home various gift bags donated by generous local businesses. The KWU sports teams and spirit squads were on hand throughout the course, holding their various fundraisers. The spirit squad raised the most money on the day and Head Cheer and Dance Coach David Almeida said that the funds would be used for a one day stunt clinic and future travel expenses.

The winning golf team was led by KWU Sports Information Director David Toelle, Jeremy Alford of Omaha, Neb., and Mike Spade from Admire, Kan. Toelle even took his score card home, and was extremely proud after finishing last several years ago.

The event’s sponsors included Crown Distributors, Vidricksen Distributing, Lambert Insurance Agency, Callabresi Heating & Cooling, Heart of America Sports Camps, and Pepsi. This was also the first time the event was held at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

“A big thanks not only to our sponsors, but to Steve Hardesty and the Municipal Golf Course. This was the first time we have used their venue and they could not have been more accommodating,” said Lamb.  For information about how you can be involved in next year’s golf tournament, contact Sophie Lamb at 785-827-5541 ext. 1129.
