The beautiful thing about having a premier athletic facility is the ability to host huge events, such as sports camps and tournaments. This is the case again this weekend as the Kansas Wesleyan University hosts the 4th annual La Quinta-KWU Volleyball Tournament. The public is invited. There is an admission charge for the tournament.

"It's a tournament that we've put on for the past 3 years with about 10 teams per year, and it's always highly competitive," said Katie Fross, Graduate Assistant Volleyball Coach. "In 2012, we had the Number 3 team in the nation, Columbia, come and compete, and we took a game off of them, losing in 4. Making an appearance in 2013 was Wayland Baptist, who finished in the final four of the national tournament that year. This year, we're featuring 3 teams from the strongest conference in the country -- the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), including Briar Cliff, who finished in the top 20 last year."

For 2014, the tournament moves from a Friday-Saturday event to Saturday and Sunday, so that none of the players will have to miss classes. On Sunday morning, Cameron Jackson, director of Campus Ministries at Kansas Wesleyan, will host a service so that the teams can all come together for worship.

"As far as I know," Katie said, "this is the only tournament in the NAIA that uses this format, so we're extremely excited about that."

The 10 schools represented at this year's tournment are host Kansas Wesleyan University, Friends University (Wichita, KS), Southwestern Christian University (Bethany, OK), Oklahoma City University (Oklahoma City, OK), Haskell Indian Nations University (Lawrence, KS), Mount Marty College (Yankton, SD), Bacone College (Muskogee, OK), Briar Cliff University (Sioux City, IA), Morningside College (Sioux City, IA) and Tabor College (Hillsboro, KS). The game will be played on two courts inside the Coyotes' Mabee Arena at the KWU Student Activities Center.
