Another Top National Ranking for KWU’s Psychological Services Degree

You are here

Kansas Wesleyan University has been named to another national list of top colleges and universities for its Psychological Services major.

The website Best Counseling Degrees (www.bestcounselingdegrees.net) has ranked Kansas Wesleyan #21 among the “Top 25 Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree.”

This is the second such national recognition this year for the Department of Psychology and the faculty at Kansas Wesleyan. In early March, the website Best Psychology Degrees named KWU to its list of “30 Great Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree (Bachelor’s),” with the national ranking of #29. READ MORE HERE.

There is no Kansas Wesleyan major specifically called Counseling. The KWU major that has been recognized in both national lists for its excellence in counseling education is Psychological Services, a clinical major that prepares students to work or pursue graduate studies in human services fields.

Psychological Services requires a common core in Psychology, Human Services, and Counseling courses. This bachelor’s degree program then guides its majors toward acquiring career expertise with additional coursework in one of six human service areas: Addictions and Substance Abuse Counseling, Domestic Issues, Educational Counseling, Health and Wellness, Human Resources, and Offender Management.

“We are small enough as a department and an institution that individual classroom learning, processing of personal growth issues, and regular internship experience can readily complement one another in shaping the well-rounded persons that we want to send out into professional settings,” said Gerald Gillespie, associate professor of Psychology/Addictions Counseling and chair of the Department of Behavioral Science & Human Services. "The Psychological Services major provides foundations in psychology, mental health, and counseling-related coursework with several different specialization areas, including a state-licensed program for aspiring addiction counselors."
