Students, faculty recognized during annual
Honors Convocation at KWU

A number of students and employees were
recognized during the annual Honors Convocation at Kansas
Wesleyan University April 29. Those recognized include the
following.
Art Department
Leadership Award
Art Department faculty select
one student who has been a positive influence to other students,
has exhibited a strong work ethic in the creation of their
own work, and who has gone above and beyond expectations to
be a positive role model to other students. This year’s
award was presented to Peggy Medina, Salina.
Communications Student of the
Year
Criteria for this award include
“outstanding achievement in the field of video production,
demonstrating maturity and professionalism in pre-production,
production and post-production work. This year’s award
went to Ashley Hurd, Topeka, and Ryan
Hicks, Santa Clarita, California.
Debate & Forensics Awards
The following Kansas Wesleyan
Debate and Forensics team members were recognized for their
many accomplishments throughout the inaugural season of the
new debate and forensics program at Kansas Wesleyan:
Abilene: Megan Hagaman
Belleville: Steve Sommerville
Ellsworth: Allyn Denning
Kansas City, Kansas: Eric Arganbright
Moundridge: Rodney Wren
Salina: Amanda Ingram

Don
Fuertges Award for Heath, Physical Education, Recreation,
and Athletic Training
This award is given to a full-time
student majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation
or Athletic Training who has satisfied the academic criteria
at the completion of the junior year. The basis for the selection
is involvement in extracurricular activities, student leadership,
participation in professional organizations, and evidence
of academic competencies in these fields. Selection is made
by faculty. The 2005 award was presented to Gary Freeman,
Lecompton.
The Jay Zarr/ Kooters Award
for Outdoor Leadership
This award is presented to the
student who best exhibits leadership, commitment, and skill
development. This year’s recipient is Andrea
Velez, Topeka.
Phi Alpha Theta national honor
society for history
Undergraduate students inducted
into Phil Alpha Theta must have completed at least 12 semester
hours in history with a grade in all history courses averaging
above a 3.0 and must have a general grade point average of
at least a 3.0. Peggy Medina, Salina, was
inducted into Phi Alpha Theta.
Additionally, members who are
degree candidates this spring were recognized. They are: Christopher
C. Ault-Duell, Larned; Dustin Dooley,
Meriden; and Peggy Medina and Jenna
Newcomer, both of Salina.
Teachers
of Promise
Criteria for the Teacher of Promise
Award include students being fully accepted into the Kansas
Wesleyan Teacher Education program, participating in a professional
organization related to their certification area, being involved
in community service that is not required by coursework, demonstrating
the potential to be an effective teacher, and achieving a
3.0 or higher grade point average. This year’s recipients
are Kylene Comeau, Salina; Dustin
Dooley, Meriden; Jeff McDonald,
Brookville; and Jenna Newcomer, Salina.
Rodney
VanZandt Scholarship
Trena Lackey,
Salina, was recognized for being awarded the Kansas NEA Rodney
VanZandt Scholarship, a scholarship designated for non-traditional
students.
Kansas
Wesleyan University Award for Civic Leadership
Sponsored by the Center for Spirituality
and Leadership, in cooperation with Kansas Wesleyan’s
Religion and Philosophy Department, this award is presented
annually to the KWU student who demonstrates the most established
leadership, and who shows significant potential for ongoing
leadership. The 2005 recipient is Rafael Mendez,
Miami, Florida.
Faculty
Distinguished Service Award
This award, presents by the Student
Leadership Association, recognizes a faculty member who inspires
students to seek the ideals of the university and cause them
to grow in knowledge and scholarship for the glory of God
and the good of others. Both excellence and innovation are
criteria for this award. The 2005 recipient is Dr.
Anita Specht, Chair of the Department of History.
Administration
& Staff Distinguished Service Award
This award honors a staff or
administration member who has made an exceptional contribution
to the university community. This year’s recipient is
Mary Kerstetter.
Mary
V. Bevan Award to the Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year
The 2005 recipient is Nicole
Heptig, Saint George.
Franklin
Eugene Bissell Award to the Outstanding Male Athlete of the
Year
The 2005 recipient is Mikeal
Knipp, Salina.
In addition to the awards, several
faculty were honored for their years of service to the university.

Joel Maiorano, Assistant Professor of Health,
Physical Education, and Recreation

Service Awards
Dr. Weston Opitz, Assistant Professor of
Biology
Frank Roth, Assistant Professor of Business
Additionally, two longtime faculty members
who plan to retire at the end of the current academic year,
were recognized for their contributions to the university.
Dr. Don Olsen,
Professor of Sociology will retire after 28 years of service.
Dr. Janet Juhnke, Chair of the Department
of English, will retire after 32 years of service.
