For a group of Kansas Wesleyan University students, the Alpha Chi gathering in Little Rock, Arkansas, was more than just a convention.
Six KWU students and faculty advisors attended the Alpha Chi Super-Regional Convention in Little Rock, Arkansas, on March 25-27. Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society. Since 1922 its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction.
During the convention, Hollie Gordee, Salina, was elected as the Student Representative for Region IV of Alpha Chi. As such, Gordee will represent the region as a member of Alpha Chi’s governing National Council.
Additionally, Meriah Forbes, Hutchinson, won the regional presentation award for Region IV of Alpha Chi. Her performance piece was considered the top presentation from this region at the conference.
The Kansas Wesleyan group also had a chance to meet with Carlotta Walls Lanier, one of the “Little Rock Nine,” the students who integrated Central High School. President Eisenhower and the 101st Airborne Division became involved in the integration when the Arkansas National Guard and an unruly mob of racists prevented integration through threats and intimidation.
Each of the KWU students received an autographed copy of Lanier’s book, "A Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School." They also visited Little Rock Central High School to see the spot where the President of the United States and nine school children took a stand for Civil Rights.
Other KWU students who attend the convention include Sabrina Albarran, Lancaster, California; Andrew Kohls, Ellsworth; Peter Madrigal, Tucson, Arizona; and Tiffany Watson, Salina.
