selects Dr. Fletcher Lamkin as 18th President

The Kansas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees today announced the hiring of Dr. Fletcher Lamkin as the 18th President of the University. Lamkin will assume the presidency of Kansas Wesleyan in early January 2010.

“Dr. Lamkin was an exceptional candidate and we are confident that he can take Kansas Wesleyan University to the next level,” said Dr. Paula Wright, Board of Trustees Chair. “The campus community is excited about what the future holds for Kansas Wesleyan University.”
“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead Kansas Wesleyan University with its inspirational values and its commitment to church, community, and the world. Together, we can expand our visibility and advance our role in the region, the State, and in the nation. This is an exciting time in Kansas Wesleyan’s history, and I am thrilled to serve as the 18th president,” Lamkin said.
Lamkin was selected from a pool of 67 candidates who sought the Kansas Wesleyan presidency.
“We had a tremendous number of highly qualified candidates, and Dr. Lamkin definitely was at the top,” said Board of Trustees Vice Chair Kent Lambert, who chaired the search committee. “The fact that so many people wanted to be president of Kansas Wesleyan speaks highly of the University.”
Lamkin and his wife, Cindy, are no strangers to higher education. Fletcher Lamkin has more than 20 years of academic leadership, including seven years as a liberal arts college President; five years as Chief Academic Officer at West Point; eight years as a department head, program director, and faculty member at West Point; and one year as University Vice President for Institutional Advancement. His work experience includes the following.
Since May 2009 – Independent Consultant in University Financial Management
2008-2009 – Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Dominican University of California
2000-2007 – President of Westminster College of Fulton, Missouri, a liberal arts college best known for being the site of Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech in 1946.
1987-2000 – Several key leadership positions at the United States Military Academy at West Point, a residential, higher educational institution of 4200 students and 550 faculty. Positions included service as an academy professor, a department head, and, from 1995 to 2000, as the Dean of the Academic Board, West Point’s equivalent of a provost .
1964-2000 – Career Army Officer: Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, was commissioned a second lieutenant and awarded a Bachelor of Science degree. Retired as a Brigadier General in 2000. Awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (6 awards), Air Medal (5 awards), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, as well as numerous service awards. Earned the honor of Distinguished Graduate and winner of the J.W. Mittendorf Award for Best Student Research at the U.S. Naval War College in 1987, where work included a highly innovative and creative war game for nuclear arms reduction that became a part of the war college curriculum in future years.
In addition to his Bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy, Lamkin also received a Master of Science degree in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley; a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from Salve Regina College; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Washington.
Cindy Dunstan Lamkin is an accomplished musician and professor. She has extensive experience in academe, having built and directed music programs in higher education for more than 20 years.
