May 5, 2005

The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) is bringing its vegetable oil and solar powered bus to Kansas Wesleyan University on May 12.

The bus will be in the parking area north of Kansas Wesleyan’s Pfeiffer Hall from 10 a.m.-
4 p.m. May 12, with a feature presentation at 3 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge, and is sponsored by the Kansas Wesleyan Outdoor Adventure Club and the Lakewood Discovery Center.

According to the NOLS website, activities provided by the bus include a climbing wall on the side of the bus, a caving simulation under the bus, fly-fishing clinics, and Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS (WMI) clinics.

The NOLS on the Road: Finding Tomorrow’s Leaders bus tour travels the country bringing the non-profit school’s educational program of outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental awareness to communities across the nation. The bus is sponsored by Silk™, the makers of organic soymilk. According to the NOLS website, the bus runs on recycled vegetable oil (RVO), a cleaner, renewable alternative to petroleum. The specially adapted vehicle is refueled with RVO at restaurants. In addition, solar panels power audio-visual equipment, lights and computers.

For more information about the NOLS bus visit to Kansas Wesleyan University, please contact Joel Garavaglia-Maiorano, Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, at 785-827-5541 ext. 3126.
