Pioneers at a Crossroads

On September 27, 2013, culminating an eventful and symbolic Homecoming week, Kansas Wesleyan University inaugurated Dr. Matthew R. Thompson as its 19th President on the steps of the Hall of Pioneers. Nearly 500 dignitaries, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends witnessed this historic event in the history of the University. The installation of Dr. Thompson was done by Randall W. St. Clair, B.A. '66, Chair of the Board of Trustees, followed by the Presidential robing by James Nelson, '77. Dr. Thompson was joined onstage by his wife, Jennifer, and his young daughter, Darcel. After being presented with the Medallion and Chain of Office by St. Clair, Dr. Thompson gave his inaugural address.

Throughout the ceremony, reflections on our history were recalled: Building FaithPursuing ExcellenceBreaking Barriers, and Pioneering Spirit. During a moving ceremony filled with inspiring words, Dr. Thompson was also given several gifts including those from the faculty, staff, Trustees, church, and students.

The inauguration was followed with by a Family Celebration, complete with carnival rides, music from The Blades, and food for everyone in attendance. The entire community was invited to this fun-filled evening - complete with a ferris wheel! This family-friendly event was a first for the campus, as our new president was able to mingle with students and members of the KWU community while enjoying the festivities.
