KWU Will Celebrate Women’s History Month

Kansas Wesleyan University will celebrate Women’s History Month by hosting a conversation on the role of women in religion. “Women in Religion – An evening of dialogue on the role of women in world religions,” will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Auditorium in Sams Hall of Fine Arts. The event will feature a panel of local female church leaders, as well as an expert on women’s issues. Coffee and conversation will follow in Fitzpatrick Auditorium.

Dr. Meredith Drees, professor of Religion and Philosophy at KWU, will moderate the panel. Some of the conversation topics will be drawn from a course, which Dr. Drees teaches, called “She Who Is.” The event will explore the role women practitioners play in religious groups and traditions, the contributions of women in religion, and the relevant and sometimes controversial subject of inequality in religion.

“This is one of my favorite classes to teach,” said Dr. Drees. “The students have been engaged, and the questions and conversations have been profound. At the moment that we are currently in as a nation and a world, this topic is relevant and intriguing. I’m excited about the discussion and hope the audience, like the students, will have the courage and open-mindedness to think critically about and grow stronger in their convictions.”

Panelists include: The Reverend Shay Craig, Curate, Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church; Captain Lynn Lopez, Corps Officer, Salvation Army; The Rev. Dr. Martha Murchison, Pastor, Sunrise Presbyterian Church; The Rev. Amy Kay Pavlovich, United Church of Christ; and The Reverend Geniese Stanford, Pastor, University United Methodist Church.

The event is part of the university’s Intersections series, which explores matters that matter at the crossroads of academia and the real world.

All are welcome to participate in this free event. The doors open at 6:30 p.m.; seats are limited. For more information, call (785) 833-4502
