Cary Brinegar had not planned to be an artist, but that’s the direction his journey is taking him.

His show of drawings and mixed media, “Journey,” is now open at The Gallery in Sams Hall of Fine Arts on the Kansas Wesleyan campus and runs through Sept. 20. A reception is planned for 5 p.m. Aug. 27, with remarks at 5:30.

“I’m not a lifetime artist,” Brinegar said. “It’s what I’ve done since retiring. It’s not been just one thing (medium). It’s been exploring, trying, therapy, etc.”

Brinegar has worked in various media since taking up art about 15 years ago, from photography to oil painting. He retired from serving as principal of USD 305’s Special Education Center.

His work leans toward the abstract, he said, and his watercolors draw inspiration from aerial photography of the rural landscape.

Admission to the Gallery is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
