Center of Public Policy and Safety
The Center of Public Policy and Safety (CPPS) at Kansas Wesleyan University is a center of learning and service that incorporates the academic departments and faculty for the majors of Criminal Justice and Emergency Management. The CPPS provides many services to the campus, community and the State of Kansas including undergraduate research, workshops and consulting in such areas as: crisis communication plans, emergency response planning, pandemic planning, police chaplaincy programs, risk assessments/hazard mitigation and threat assessments.
With several courses that easily cross both disciplines, it is very possible to graduate (on-time) with a degree in both majors!
Majors are offered online, on ground, or hybrid.
Members of the Center of Public Policy and Safety are available for public presentations and speaking engagements on a variety of topics including:
Brothels of Kansas
We all have heard the term “red light district” but did you know that it originated in Kansas? Did you know that the sister in-law of Wyatt Earp was arrested from running a “bawdy house” in Wichita? From the concert saloons to the purity leagues this presentation takes a look into a chapter of our history that many would rather see edited out.
Brothels, Bootleggers, and Badmen of Salina
Salina is a city of industry and diversity, but it also is a city with a blue history. This Presentation recounts the history of brothels and the women who worked in them, how prohibition was just seen as a suggestion to many in town, and some of the infamous outlaws to ply their trade in Salina, Kansas
Conspiracy Theories – What “they” don’t want you to know
Why do people seem so willing to embrace conspiracies as an explanation of events? How can a rational person determine if there is a conspiracy? A look at the terms used by and in conspiracy theories, historical conspiracies and hoaxes thought to be conspiracies, and the reasons conspiracy theories flourish are examined.
Horse Thieves: The Famous and Infamous
This presentation explores some of the legendary horse thieves and organized horse thief gangs; their tricks and methods of operation; and examines the stories of some horse thieves whom history has all but forgotten. Tales of the men, women, ex-lawmen, clergy, persons from all walks of life who, have a love of horses, and distain for the law in common.
